According to the report of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), the lowering economic inequality is directly proportional to the economic growth rate. However, in this context, the idea of lowering social inequality, should go hand in hand because it forms the basic for economic equality. As such, government's increased spending on childcare, may not impress many because it would not give immediate benefits. It is a long-term goal. But, in the long run, it would bring down inequality. Further, it would move the wheels of economic growth steadily.
It is unfortunate that many people, who want immediate results from the policies and the mission of the government, do not hold faith in the initiative of lowering economic inequality. They prefer economic growth rate to focusing on economic inequality. As such, they would not like to sacrifice economic growth rate on the altar of preventive measures taken for lowering economic equality. Their idea is that a rising tide lifts all boats, and so it is better to focus on economic growth rather than on inequality.
The argument of such people is lop-sided. They need to understand that such a forced economic growth, which is not a natural one but a compulsion, would leave many, fish out of water. It is true that necessity is the mother of invention, but, only some people would manage to cope with the fostered growth rate. To manage in such a situation, it would not be difficult for the well-doing middle class or the rich class.
Also, the skilled workforce - technical and non-technical, would pull on. But, the unskilled labourers and the unskilled illiterates would have to make vain attempts to make the both ends meet. In this wild-goose chase, many would land in either starvation or partial starvation. The worst form that such a race of economic growth rate, would be the increase in crime in different forms. To survive in a die-hard competition, many would not flinch in making money through unfair means.
What is the use of creating a society that boasts of its high economic growth rate, but has no peace and no fair means of making a living ? This would not merely, give rise to an unbalanced economy but widen the gap between the rich and the poor. Moreover, mere GDP is a dilution of the income of the nation, that is hardly, accelerated by the income of downtrodden. The adverse effects would not be visible, on the middle or the average earner but the below average earners. Embarking on an ambitious economic growth rate would make matters worse. The latter would be pushed into becoming a destitute.
Hence, sacrificing the initiatives of lowering the economic inequality on the altar of enhancement of lop-sided economic growth rate, would be too ambitious. Such a growth rate that lacks a foundation, is unsustainable.
