July 11, 2015 is the day that records the population of India at a new height. India grows to 127,42,39,769. According to National Population Stabilixation Fund ( NPSF ), this number forms 17.25% of the world population. This The annual growth rate is 1.6%. This day is auspicious in the sense that world celebrates it as the population day.
Apprehensions of NFSF follow the new record. The record is an indicator of the unbridled growth of population. It is a thing of displeasure that the population of India has been reaching incredible heights despite the increase in literacy and awareness coupled with efforts put in by the Indian government, on the lines of family planning and the slogan, ' Chota parivar, Sukhi parivar'. Eventhough, problems
and unfavourable circumstances impede the government's efforts in leashing the population, new methods and initiatives should be undertaken. Otherwise, the worries that the Indian population might put the country at the top of the list of the world's populous countries by the 2050. Today, the world's most populous country, China stands at 1.39 billion, and overtaking it, would be an unpleasant victory. At a time when nations are striving to raise the standard of living and reduce the unemployment, the government of India should move judiciously and with precision. Apart from the census taken in a decade, increased campaigns should be carried out. Government should take the help of teachers, health officers and NGOs in the awareness programme. Students should carry placards displaying the necessity of small family. Such campaigns undertaken by students at rural as well as urban levels, might go a long way in driving the point home.
The report of 2011 that the population of India is almost equal to the combined population of USA, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Japan put together. The fact that the population of Uttar Pradesh remains equal to the population of a country, Brazil which is the 5th most populous country in the world. Article Goodwill opines that without the effective measures taken in the direction of population control. developmental projects will get retarded.
It is time the government joined hands with state governments and took population control as a mission. This problem deserves the similar concern what the crises like afforestation, climate change
and unemployment deserve.
