Who is John Grierson ?



             John Grierson was a pioneering Scottish documentary makerHe is often called the father of British and Canadian documentary film.                                    


              He was born on April 26, 1898, at Deanston, United Kingdom. His famous book is 'Eyes of Democracy'. His father was a school master. His mother was an ardent Labour Party activist. Both his mother and father played a dominant role in developing an interest in him towards liberal politicsm humanistic ideals, and Calvinist moral and religious philosophies. His parents' contribution to him in understanding that education is essential to individual freedom and that hard and meaningful work was the way to prove oneself worthy.

              In fact, "documentary" is a term coined by Grierson in 1926.
  He played a key role in Canadian film world. He made a meticulous study of the condition of the film production of the government of Canada. His study gave rise to the National Act of 1939. Further, it paved the path to the establishment of National Film board of Canada. It became the agency of the Canadian government. In 1968, the Canadian Film Development Corporation was established. The National Film Board of Canada is famous for its animation and documentary production all over the world. Today, only one-third of its budget is spent on the production of new films. Canada's film industry is nicknamed "Hollywood North" because a big part of it driven by American producers and American distribution.
